Detienen en EE. UU. a alto oficial de la DEA destacado en RD por presuntas irregularidades con visas para informantes
Miami.— Un supervisor de la oficina de la Administración para el Control de Drogas (DEA, por sus siglas en inglés) asignado en la República Dominicana fue arrestado en el marco de una investigación federal sobre el presunto uso indebido de un programa de visas destinado a informantes confidenciales.
De acuerdo con informaciones ofrecidas a la agencia The Associated Press por un funcionario activo y un exfuncionario estadounidense, el detenido fue identificado como Melitón Cordero. Ambos hablaron bajo condición de anonimato debido a que el proceso investigativo continúa en curso.
La pesquisa es encabezada por el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) de Estados Unidos. Hasta el momento, no se han ofrecido detalles específicos sobre los cargos que podrían derivarse del caso. Tampoco hubo respuesta inmediata a solicitudes de comentarios dirigidas a la DEA ni al DHS.
Cierre temporal de oficina
El arresto se produce días después de que la embajadora de Estados Unidos en el país, Leah F. Campos, informara el cierre temporal de la oficina antinarcóticos en territorio dominicano. La diplomática comunicó que la medida responde a una investigación interna y reiteró su política de “cero tolerancia” ante cualquier conducta que pueda comprometer la integridad institucional.

Por su parte, el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, Roberto Álvarez, aclaró que la decisión corresponde exclusivamente a una indagatoria interna de las autoridades estadounidenses y que no guarda relación con actuaciones del Gobierno dominicano.
Programa bajo la lupa
El programa de visas para informantes permite que agencias federales como la DEA y el FBI gestionen la entrada a Estados Unidos de extranjeros que colaboran con investigaciones, incluso si previamente han tenido vínculos con actividades ilícitas. En algunos casos, estos colaboradores pueden optar posteriormente por residencia permanente, siempre bajo estrictos controles y requisitos legales.
Un informe de supervisión del Departamento de Justicia de 2019 ya había señalado debilidades en la administración de este mecanismo, incluyendo deficiencias en el seguimiento de algunos beneficiarios, lo que encendió alertas sobre posibles riesgos a la seguridad pública.
Cooperación bilateral continúa
La República Dominicana es considerada un punto estratégico en las rutas del narcotráfico que conectan Suramérica con Norteamérica y Europa. En ese contexto, las autoridades dominicanas mantienen una cooperación constante con agencias estadounidenses en materia de interdicción y combate al crimen organizado.
Recientemente, el presidente Luis Abinader autorizó a Estados Unidos a operar en áreas específicas de la Base Aérea de San Isidro y del Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Américas, como parte de los esfuerzos conjuntos para fortalecer la lucha contra el narcotráfico.
Las autoridades estadounidenses han indicado que ofrecerán mayores detalles una vez avance el proceso judicial. Mientras tanto, el caso mantiene la atención tanto en Washington como en Santo Domingo.
