Así se instalaría el cable submarino que conectaría los sistemas eléctricos de RD y Puerto Rico.
Santo Domingo.– La República Dominicana y Puerto Rico avanzan en un ambicioso proyecto energético que busca interconectar sus sistemas eléctricos mediante un cable submarino de alta tensión, una iniciativa que requerirá exhaustivos estudios técnicos antes de su instalación en el fondo marino.
La empresa Caribbean Transmission Development Company (CTDC), responsable del plan, explicó que el primer paso consiste en un estudio detallado de la ruta propuesta, a fin de identificar el trayecto más adecuado y posibles obstáculos en el lecho marino.
Una vez definida la ruta, el cable es fabricado conforme a las condiciones del terreno, incluyendo la armadura necesaria para protegerlo de daños causados por equipos de pesca u otros factores. Posteriormente, es tendido en el fondo del mar mediante barcos especializados y, en algunos tramos, enterrado para mayor protección.

CTDC indicó que, tras la instalación, el cable es conectado a equipos costeros y submarinos y sometido a pruebas para garantizar su correcto funcionamiento. El proyecto también contempla un sistema de monitoreo continuo y mantenimiento, con el uso de vehículos submarinos operados a distancia para detectar y reparar posibles fallas.
La iniciativa, denominada Proyecto Hostos, contempla la instalación de un cable submarino de unos 160 kilómetros, que permitiría aportar hasta 500 megavatios al sistema eléctrico de Puerto Rico, fortaleciendo la estabilidad energética y la seguridad eléctrica en la región.
